Evening Talk: British Army Pathfinders

The Pathfinders date back to WW2 and since then they have operated in Borneo, Yugoslavia, Sierra Leonne, Macedonia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon. Trained extensively in the skills necessary for close target reconnaissance, strike missions and making of drop zones, their selection is often used by volunteers as a stepping stone to UKSF. So what manner of soldier are these, what are they capable of and how do they compare to their peers in Allied and Enemy Airborne Forces? Tickets include a welcome glass of wine and Members are welcome to bring guests.

(Sun 2 to Tues 4 August) SOE was created in 1940, its mission to create, equip and train resistance networks throughout German occupied Europe. Our SOE summer ‘camp’ (there’s no actual camping!) will take volunteers through - its creation; training and equipment; agent profiles; and German counter insurgency capability. We’ll also explore SOE related activities including silent killing, close quarter shooting, target reconnaissance, agent contact, mission planning, demolition charges and booby traps, and the kidnap of a senior German Officer!

The Combined Military Services Museum in Maldon, Essex, houses an outstanding collection of military artefacts. Members have been granted private access and a rare hands-on opportunity to study the real objects and stories of some iconic operations, including the only surviving canoe from Operation Frankton, “James Bond” Cold War espionage devices, footwear with hidden knife blades, and weapons used by the SAS on Operation Nimrod in 1980. We start with a social talk and dine event on Sunday, and all accommodation, entry fees food, travel and guide costs are included in the ticket price.

The film, an exploration with eyewitness accounts of the truces and games of football that broke out across WW1 battlefronts during Christmas 1914, was expertly introduced and concluded by Film Club member John March. Mike’s story and subject matter entertained and enthralled Members; from piloting US Navy P-3s hunting Russian submarines in the North Atlantic during the 1980s, to working in the Operations Directorate, Joint Staff, in the Pentagon, and now attempting to wield the 'power of power' as the CEO of a global security and nuclear power business. Presented by Bob Shaw, at the Union Jack Club, Waterloo London on the 30th April 2026, our talk covers the conflict in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999, fought between Yugoslav forces and the Kosovo Liberation Army. The conflict ended when NATO used air strikes and with the intervention of 1 Para, 3 Para and 1 Gurkha Rifles to secure routes to allow the movement of NATO armoured forces to provide humanitarian relief.
