Avi was born and raised in New York.  He received a BA in Literature and Rhetoric from SUNY Binghampton and after a few years spent travelling and working, then obtained MAs in Folklore and Anthropology from the University of Oregon.  In 2000 he spent a year at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies and then moved to Jerusalem where he worked for a number of social justice organisations.

Debby grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in English and Film Studies.  After graduating she travelled and eventually arrived in Israel having made aliyah.  Since then she has been teaching English to immigrants and refugees, advocating for Ethiopian Jews and working as a doula and massage therapist.

Avi and Debby have four daughters and between them enjoy gardening, mud-building, hand-drumming, hiking, playing guitar and many other hobbies which they look forward to sharing with the students.
