Providing a Safe Space for Students

The Living RoomJewish students have faced a surprising increase in hostility and their Chaplains have been at the front lines combating these challenges. In Oxford, when Jewish students complained that they felt uncomfortable entering their Junior Common Room Rabbi Aaron and Shira Katchen responded immediately. A message was immediately spread amongst students that the Chaplains home would be transformed into a student lounge each evening with fresh cakes, coffee and a welcoming environment on offer so that Jewish students could enjoy a safe space with each other.

Dubbed ‘The Living Room’, the Katchens have received enthusiastic interest and thanks from their students as they and the Chaplaincy team address the urgent needs of students on campus today.
